The AMT dedicates its efforts to two major periods of music: the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
To the medieval mind, music was mysterious and powerful. Science, art, and religion were fused, and music mirrored both the physical universe and the psyche as one. Music was imbued with divine energy; therefore it was to be revered, even feared, and the authority of the Church governed its use. Although music was strictly a vocal art in those times, it was well suited to the recorder consort. In the course of time, as music was slowly released from the restrictions the Church, the recorder consort became more acceptable.
From out of the ashes of the black plague the people of 15th century Europe rebounded with a renewed strength and vigor. The hallmark of the Renaissance was that Science, Art and Philosophy continued to break free independently of each other and of the Church. All three flourished in the sunlight of this new Age of Reason. It was an era of explosive innovation, especially in secular music, where pastoral and courtly love themes were celebrated.
The AMT has recorded two CD’s: one with selections from the 13th to 17th centuries, and the most recent is a Christmas collection, "Thy Light Is Come".
