"Minstrels at Play": Our touring presentaton
The recorder is ideal for introducing instrumental music to children. All the techniques learned on the recorder apply directly to learning to play the clarinet, flute, saxophone, etc. It is inexpensive, durable, portable, and capable of producing beautiful music of the highest quality. The trio seeks to promote the appreciation of the pure tones and transparent textures of the recorder family. In a world that thrives on technology, we need to be reminded of the value of simplicity.
Program Description
The Ancient Music Trio presents both sacred and secular music for recorders and violin from the 12th to 16th centuries. The recorder is part of a family of instruments which have produced music of exquisite beauty for centuries. The authentic sound of wooden instruments paired with medieval style costumes helps to stimulate the imagination and transport children to the distant past where they can envision their own medieval characters and story lines. Trio members step into various character roles to suggest a historical and social context for the musical selections. The concept of chivalry in particular, had a lasting effect on shaping social and moral values, and the Trio addresses some of the connections between the chivalric code and present day “character education”.
Every piece of music offers an opportunity for a tidbit of historical or musical trivia or a special feature to listen for, and audience members will add to the musical textures with ostinato rhythm patterns or by humming drone notes. A question period at the end of the performance is always welcome!
Teachers who are using the recorder in their classroom or who are teaching the "Medieval Times" unit may want to highlight certain aspects of the curriculum. We are happy to adapt our performance slightly to accommodate specific interests, as long as we have advance notice. Please make such requests at time of booking so that the program co-ordinator can contact you to discuss your areas of emphasis.
