About the Ancient Music Trio
The members of the Ancient Music Trio are: Fred Cory and Julian Nelson on a variety of recorders (bass, tenor, alto, descant and sopranino), and Deborah Henderson on violin. They enjoy playing music from the 13th to 17th centuries because they find that it offers a respite from the relentless pace of pop culture.
The AMT has made regular appearances at the Northumberland Dry Stone Wall Festival, Horizons of Friendship's "Writers and Friends" and "Homes, Gardens and Music Tour" fundraising events.
They have been guest artists with the Oriana Singers of Cobourg at their Christmas Wassail concert. They have also performed recitals at churches across Northumberland County, and have spent many a pleasant Sunday afternoon performing for patrons at The Human Bean Cafe in Cobourg.
Fred Cory
Fred is an experienced musician with 25 years of performing experience in orchestra, theatre orchestra, chamber music, jazz and commercial ensembles. He has studied both jazz and classical music, earning a performance degree at the University of Victoria on flute and a diploma in jazz studies on saxophone at Vancouver Community College. In recent years, Fred has become interested in early music and has taken up the recorder in order to play pre-classical music more authentically. Fred is also a registered massage therapist working in Cobourg and Port Hope.
Deborah Henderson
Deborah lives in Port Hope where she runs a Suzuki-based violin program. Her students range in age from 4 to 60+. She directs a fiddle group called “String Fever,” which developed out of her regular Suzuki group class, and she enjoys bringing together students of every age and ability level for workshops and performances.
Deborah holds degrees in Fine Arts and Education from Queen’s University. She is the co-ordinator of the AMT’s school performance program.
Julian Nelson
Julian, a native of Brighton, is a former student turned colleague, who now teaches a few recorder students himself. He is interested in cooking, philosophy, agriculture, and folk music.
